Nachappa lab is a contributing member of two multistate research projects hosted on NIMSS. Learn more about these projects below:
​Industrial Hemp Production, Processing, and Marketing in the U.S.

Goal: To provide growers with the necessary tools to utilize hemp in their production systems to increase U.S. agricultural production with a reduction in environmental footprint.

This will be accomplished through:
  • Genomics-enabled plant breeding
  • Improving soil health
  • Reducing reliance on pesticides and chemical fertilizers
  • Improving water quality
  • Addressing climate change by producing domestically grown food and industrial feedstocks that can replace fossil fuel-based materials and simultaneously sequester carbon
​Hemp Pest Management and Production in the Western USA

Goal: To address hemp production problems through an integrated management approach.

This will be accomplished through the following objectives:
  • Characterize the biology of hemp pathogens, insect pests, nematodes, and weeds.
  • Organize research on the ecology and epidemiology of the pathogens and their insect vectors and transmission, insect movement, and the role of weed hosts in carry-over of insect and pathogens.
  • Organize research to improve management of pests, pathogens, and weeds of hemp.
  • Organize research on hemp cultivation and production.
  • Provide a national platform for education on hemp.
